Shane Meadows, the day shift foreman at Carter Coal Company's Thelma No. 6 Mine in Caretta, W. Va., stops the mining machine briefly to shout to another worker. This small McDowell County operation is
re-mining a coal mine that was closed in the 1950's. Meadows says it takes a certain kind of person to be a miner but he loves it and wouldn't want any other job.
